Understanding Texas’ Open Primary System
Texas operates under an open primary system.
That means:
- Voters may choose to vote in either the Republican or Democratic primary.
- Prior voting history does not restrict which primary you choose.
- Voting in one party’s primary does not prevent you from voting for candidates of another party in the general election.
- You may choose a different party’s primary in future election cycles.
This flexibility matters—especially in Bexar County.
Two Critical Races for Bexar County
While many important contests are on the ballot, two races stand out as especially consequential for public safety in our community:
Bexar County Judge (Democratic Primary)
Because of the Democratic voting dominance in Bexar County, the Democratic primary for County Judge will very likely determine who ultimately serves in that role.
The County Judge oversees the Commissioners Court, influences the county budget, and plays a central role in criminal justice funding, jail operations, infrastructure, and emergency management.
DSABC proudly endorses:
Peter Sakai for Bexar County Judge
Judge Sakai has demonstrated leadership, fairness, and a practical understanding of how county government decisions directly affect public safety professionals and the communities they serve. Under his watch, our compensation and recruitment have risen, and Bexar County is safer because of it.
Bexar County District Attorney (Democratic Primary)
The District Attorney is one of the most powerful public safety offices in the county. The DA’s policies determine how cases are prosecuted, how victims are treated, and how law enforcement partners with prosecutors.
DSABC proudly endorses:
Luz Elena Chapa for Bexar County District Attorney
We believe her experience, professionalism, and commitment to accountability make her the right choice to lead the District Attorney’s Office at a time when collaboration and strong prosecution policies are essential to community safety.
