Remembering Sheriff Joseph L. Hood. Rest easy, brother.
The North Carolinian applied for Texas citizenship at Nacogdoches in 1829. Hood was a business associate of Alamo defender, Eliel Melton, while also a General Council-appointed judge. He moved to Bexar County in 1837 where he was elected sheriff that same year. Hood would also be reelected in 1839. On March 19th, 1840, Hood was involved in the Council House Fight. The event began as peace/hostage negotiations between the settlements and Penateka Comanche tribes. Due to a failure of understanding and a lack of progress, the Council House erupted into a violent melee that resulted in the death of 35 Comanche tribe members and 7 Texas settlers. Sheriff Joseph L. Hood was stabbed with an arrowhead while struggling with a member of the Comanche tribe. He would succumb to his wounds, dying at the age of 38. He was survived by eight siblings.
