SAN ANTONIO, TX – The Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Bexar County (DSABC), through its charitable arm ACT DSABC, welcomed families once again for its second annual “Cookies with Santa” celebration—an event that has quickly become a treasured tradition for children and deputies alike. With rising living costs, higher grocery prices, and reduced benefits placing pressure on household budgets, this year’s gathering offered much-needed joy and relief for families navigating a difficult holiday season.

Held at 9200 Broadway, Suite 120, the event drew more than 100 children and their parents for an afternoon filled with festive treats, creative activities, and holiday cheer. Many families shared that, in a year when they have had to watch their budgets more closely than ever, having a free, warm, community-focused event meant the world to them.

Girl getting face painted.

Ron Tooke, President of the DSABC, reflected on how meaningful the event is not just for families, but also for deputies—many of whom work through the holidays to keep the community safe.

“This event gives our deputies a rare chance to step away from the stress of their duties and experience the joy of Christmas with the community they serve,” Tooke said. “A lot of our men and women can’t take time off during the typical Christmas break. Seeing children smile, laughing with families, and feeling the warmth of the season—this brings them just as much joy as it brings the kids.”

Veronica Drake, Executive Director of ACT DSABC, highlighted the importance of community support during a season marked by economic strain.

“For families who aren’t used to watching every dollar so closely, this holiday season has been especially challenging,” Drake said. “Events like this remind people they’re not alone. A simple gift, a cookie, or a hand-decorated stocking can lift spirits in ways that are truly powerful. We’re grateful to play a small part in making the holidays brighter.”

New to this year’s event was a stocking decorating station, where children designed their own Christmas stockings to take home. Meanwhile, Santa, the Grinch and Mrs. Clause returned to take photos and hear what the kids were putting on their wish lists this year.

The celebration also served as a collection point for ACT DSABC’s holiday toy drive, helping ensure that families across Bexar County will feel the warmth of generosity this Christmas, no matter the challenges they face.

As economic pressures continue to affect local families, ACT DSABC remains committed to serving the community—and supporting the deputies who protect it—through compassion, service, and holiday spirit.
