As the holiday season brings communities together in gratitude, the Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Bexar County (DSABC) and its charitable organization, ACT DSABC, are proud to embody the spirit of Thanksgiving by giving back to the people we serve every day. Through two recent initiatives, ACT DSABC has made a meaningful impact, ensuring families in Bexar County can celebrate the holiday with full hearts and tables.
“Our work at ACT DSABC extends beyond supporting the wellness of our deputy sheriffs—we’re deeply committed to improving the overall well-being of Bexar County residents,” said Veronica Drake, Executive Director of ACT DSABC. “By partnering with incredible community organizations, we ensure our efforts are targeted and impactful, reaching those who need it most. Together, we’re creating a stronger, more connected community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”
A Day of Generosity at Comanche Park
On Saturday, November 23, ACT DSABC played a central role in bringing the spirit of Thanksgiving to life at the Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway at Comanche Park. Demonstrating its commitment to supporting the community, ACT DSABC sponsored 600 of the turkeys distributed to local families in need and actively worked to secure additional sponsors to ensure the event’s success. Beyond their financial contribution, the organization also helped with event coordination, ensuring everything ran smoothly for the families who came to receive their Thanksgiving meals.
The event, organized in partnership with Gospel Vision Ministries and the San Antonio Food Bank, was a shining example of collaboration. Together, they provided Thanksgiving meals to 1,000 local families. Community leaders, including Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai, Sheriff Javier Salazar, Commissioner Tommy Calvert, and Constable Kat Brown, joined forces to support this effort. Contributions like fresh vegetables from AgriLife Bexar County and volunteer support from groups such as Blue Knights Texas IV and Priceless Slingaz added to the day’s success.
Thanks to ACT DSABC’s sponsorship, coordination, and dedication, hundreds of families in Bexar County will now gather around the table this Thanksgiving with the food and hope they need to celebrate the holiday.
Spreading Holiday Cheer, One Family at a Time
On November 23 and 24, ACT DSABC joined forces with One Hand Feeds the Other, supporting their heartfelt mission to provide Thanksgiving meals to families in need. With a $1,000 donation from ACT DSABC, the organization was able to distribute turkeys and sides to 60 families, helping ensure that no one went without during this special season. This initiative, championed by community leaders Freddy Flores and Rosie Baca, exemplifies how local partnerships can change lives.
“We’re honored to support such an inspiring cause,” said Ron Tooke, President of the Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Bexar County. “As deputy sheriffs, our mission is not only to protect our community but also to uplift it. Giving back is part of who we are—it complements our role as law enforcement officers and strengthens the bonds of trust and compassion that unite us all.”
Why Giving Back Matters
For the deputy sheriffs of Bexar County, serving the community extends far beyond the badge. Initiatives like these underscore the DSABC’s commitment to protecting not just the physical safety of residents but also their well-being. By supporting those in need, DSABC and ACT DSABC show that law enforcement can be a bridge to hope and a force for good.
“The work of ACT DSABC highlights how much we can accomplish when we collaborate,” Tooke added. “These events remind us that Thanksgiving isn’t just about food; it’s about family, community, and gratitude. As deputy sheriffs, we’re grateful for the opportunity to serve and give back.”
Looking Ahead
As we gather with loved ones this Thanksgiving, let’s take a moment to reflect on how we can give back to our communities. Whether through volunteering, donating, or simply spreading kindness, every act of generosity matters. DSABC and ACT DSABC remain committed to their mission of service, both in and out of uniform, and look forward to continuing this work throughout the holiday season and beyond.
From all of us at DSABC and ACT DSABC, Happy Thanksgiving!
Let’s celebrate the season by sharing what we can and lifting up those around us. Together, we make Bexar County a place where everyone has a reason to give thanks
